The Montreal Canadiens overcame some significant odds to win three straight games against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and while this is an accomplishment to be praised, it may be taking things a little too far.
Over the weekend, Fanatics, the NHL's official gear partner, unveiled a new shirt in their lineup, one that not only commemorates the Canadiens' incredible first-round comeback, but also, in my opinion, takes a shot at their long-time rivals in Toronto. To be honest, I don't like for the shirt and believe the product is a little tacky, but I can see why some people might want one, especially to have one on hand for the next time the Maple Leafs come to town.
The shirt, which is primarily black in colour with white writing on it, prominently displays the slogan "It was 3 - 1" on the back, which was widely shared on social media in the days leading up to Game 7 between the two teams and was even more widely shared immediately after the Canadiens' victory over the Maple Leafs in that game. That motto has frequently been used to criticise the Maple Leafs, and while this isn't always the case, I can't imagine that those responsible for designing this jersey were unaware of this.
