The Seattle Kraken Could be a Contender Due to a Luxury no Other Playoff Team Has
After a disastrous first season in the NHL, the Seattle Kraken have rebounded in a massive way.
While they lack true superstar talent, they have some of the best depth in the league. The team may have average goaltending, they have a strong defense.
Coach Dave Hakstoll has turned this team into what could be a genuine contender. They aren't the most glamorous team, but they are winning games left and right.
An analyst at DobberProspects has revealed one aspect of Seattle's situation that could make their situation even more favourable.
Seattle's my dark horse for the cup now they don't have the true star-power, but they have the cap-space.
In today's NHL, I'm pretty sure the cap space is worth more.
If (Chris) Driedger and (Joonas) Donskoi both go on LTIR, the Kraken will have 8.6-million in current space (today), but more like 11.3-million accrued (hasty math so this is off by a bit).
That's a luxury no playoff team has had in a lot of years.
Having what will be around $11-million in cap space at the deadline will allow them to make several moves to beef up their team. Whether this is a goaltender, a defender, or even a forward, the Kraken could go all-in just one year into their tenure as an NHL team.
They haven't been much into the conversation for a player like Patrick Kane, but as the deadline looms, who knows what could happen?
