On Thursday night in Toronto, Maple Leafs captain John Tavares was rushed off the ice on a stretcher after colliding with the Montreal Canadiens early in the first-round playoff matchup. It was an unintentional collision: Tavares collided with Habs defender Ben Chariot, fell to the ice defenceless, and was struck by forward Corey Perry's knee. Before he was taken away, trainers and paramedics from both teams raced to the ice and attended to the veteran forward. For several minutes, the game was paused. The Canadiens won this game to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Without a doubt, no one expected the series to begin in this manner - not only with a Habs win, but also with a serious injury to a key player.
Although the news was relevant to write, the Toronto Sun and the Journal de Montreal were severely chastised on Friday morning for their headlines and photos, as well as how they dealt with the news of Tavares' gruesome injury by making light of it. Several fans, commentators, and insiders are dissatisfied with how the serious injury is being presented, especially with no consideration for Tavares' family.
We can't believe the Toronto Sun used Captain Crunch as a punch line!
The injury is very severe, and every single player on the ice expressed how frightening the situation was. Because of the seriousness of Tavares' situation, some pundits say the game may have been postponed or even called off.
Sheldon Keefe, the Maple Leafs' head coach, said after the loss that Tavares was alert and talking well. He added that his tests had come back negative, but that Tavares would have to stay in the hospital overnight.
Let's hope he's not trying to unwind by reading the newspaper...
