There Will No Longer Be a World Cup of Hockey in 2024
The NHL and the NHLPA has announce that the 2024 World Cup of Hockey has been postponed until at least 2025.
Unfortunately, in the current environment it is not feasible to hold the World Cup of Hockey (in February 2024)," the statement reads. "We continue to plan for the next World Cup of Hockey, hopefully in February 2025
The tournament, that was supposed to come in February of 2024 will be pushed back at least one year.
The NHL hasn't participated in the Olympics since 2014, and this was planned to be a worthy alternative to the games. There have been three previous World Cups of Hockey, in 1996, 2004 and 2016.
It is unfortunate that we will not see the aging superstars of the NHL compete in a best-on-best tournament again, as players such as Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin may be retired by then.
Hopefully 2025 will be the start of a new, permanent tradition in hockey.
