Traded to Calgary recently, Jonathan Huberdeau wasted no time getting along with his new team in order to quickly put an end to the rumours about him becoming an uncompensated free agent in the summer of 2023.
He signed an eight-season deal at $10.5 million per year. The new contract fashion is simple for star players: a "small" salary and big bonuses at the end of the year, in an effort to save on the escrow, sent to the NHL.
Huberdeau is no exception.
Here are the details of his contract:
1. $7M bonus, $3.5M salary
2. $7M bonus, $3.5M salary
3. $7M bonus, $3.5M salary
4. $9.5M in bonuses, $1M in salary
5. $9.5M bonus, $1M in salary
6. $7M bonus, $3.5M salary
7. $9.5M bonus, $1M in salary
8. $5M bonus, $5.5M in salary
Add to that a no-movement clause, except for years 7 and 8, where he can choose 12 teams.
