This prompted the belief that the Leafs were going all-in this year, and that they aren't done.
During this week's iteration of Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoughts, Friedman confirmed that the Leafs are still looking to improve their roster. With their cap situation still being very tight, they need to look for budget-friendly acquisitions.
One player that Friedman mentioned as a target is New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield. Apart from bringing a physical presence, Mayfield has been half of the best defensive pairing in the league this season.
While they don't put up many points, Mayfield and teammate Aho have the lowest xGA (expected goals against). This would be a phenomenal piece for the Leafs to add. Even better, he makes only $1.45-million.
This would be an absolute coup for Kyle Dubas, especially since he won't come at a ridiculous cost like other blueliners on the block.
We will have to wait and see if the Leafs can pull it off, but if they can, it would make them a much more competitive team.
