Anaheim Ducks' Jakob Silfverberg surprisingly announced his retirement from the NHL.

Chris Johnston shared the news on X: the veteran defenseman will retire at the end of the current season.

"Jakob Silfverberg announces that he's retiring from the NHL at the end of his season. Originally drafted by Ottawa, he spent the last 11 years with Anaheim."

The Anaheim Ducks also released an official statement:

"A special player and humble leader in our locker room and community throughout his 11 seasons in Anaheim.

Congratulations on a great career, Silfvy!

Jakob Silfverberg will retire from the NHL at the conclusion of this season."

Silfverberg also commented his decision to retire in a heartfelt declaration:

"It's been an honor and privilege to play in the National Hockey League. I want to thank the Samueli family for being who they are, gracious, community-minded owners that support their team while making a significant impact in our community. Obviously I wouldn't be where I am without my teammates, all the trainers and staff that have helped me along the way. Most importantly, thank you to my family who have supported me as I lived out a dream.

Thank you to the fans around the league, specifically in Anaheim and Ottawa. To spend 11 years in Orange County playing for the Ducks is something I will cherish every day, thanks in large part to all of you."

Silfverberg, 33, was drafted 39th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2009. Two years later, he joined the Anaheim Ducks, where he spent the rest of his career.

In 817 NHL games, he scored 373 points, including 168 goals.

He was named on the 2020 NHL All-Star team and won mutiple medals on the international level, representing Sweden seven times in his career.

More to come.
