It's not a question of if but when.
Clearly, Erik Karlsson will soon be traded by the San Jose Sharks. Over the past few weeks, two teams emerged as the favorites to land the former Senators' captain: the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Trade sending Erik Karlsson to the Hurricanes
In this scenario, we would see Karlsson being traded to Carolina, with the Sharks retaining 30% of Karlsson's salary. The Hurricanes would send defenseman Brett Pesce, goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, a 2024 2nd round pick, and a 2025 1st round pick.
Is it a fair return for the Sharks?
It sure seems like a fair return for San Jose.
However, the Sharks are not trying to win now. If Pyotr Kochetkov is a great prospect, GM Mike Grier would perhaps prefer another prospect at the blue line, instead of acquiring Pesce who is already 28 years old.
