A new report has shockingly linked Penguins defenseman Kris Letang to the Montreal Canadiens.

A trade does not seem imminent between the two teams, but there is a new rumor spreading across hockey circles that the Penguins and Canadiens may have had trade discussions earlier in the summer. The Hockey Writers reporter Jim Parsons published an article yesterday covering a multitude of topics.

Among them was the Pittsburgh Penguins and Kris Letang. He picked up on a story from famous Pittsburgh sports radio host Mark Madden, who claimed that Letang wants to end his career in Montreal and that the Penguins and Canadiens went so far as to discuss a potential deal this summer. Clearly, that deal never turned into anything though.

"According to Mark Madden, an NHL insider who works for 105.9 The X and TribLive, the Pittsburgh Penguins have discussed the possibility of trading veteran defenseman Kris Letang to the Montreal Canadiens.

Kristopher Letang, who is entering the third year of his $36.6 million contract, has been a cornerstone of the Penguins' defense."

As Parson points out, Letang is a player to keep an eye on going forward. Even if this current rumor is completely false, Letang could be dangled as a trade candidate in the coming years.

He still has four years left on his current contract, but the Penguins figure to be rebuilding during most, if not all those years. Furthermore, they have added Erik Karlsson as their new number one offensive blueliner. As such, Letang could very well be in play as far as trades go in the upcoming year.

"Letang remains with Pittsburgh for now, but it will be interesting to see if more trade talks with Montreal arise if the Penguins struggle in the 2024-25 season."

On habs fan went to X to share their thoughts on a potential deal that would bring in Letang. Understandably, they are not particuarly excited about it as the veteran defenseman is already 37 years old. Not only does he not fit their timeline, but trading for him could actively hurt the rebuild. This particular fan is only entertaining the possibility if the trade also included Sidney Crosby, in what would be one of the biggest and most shocking trades in NHL history.

Surely, if the Penguins were to trade Letang, it would shock many across the NHL. After all, Kyle Dubas continues to say that the team is committed to being competitive as long as Sidney Crosby is there. Letang is part of that core. Trading him will be seen as an admission that the team simply isn't good enough anymore. If that is the case, what would come next? Trading Sidney Crosby? Anything is possible.
