Fleury Breaks The Rules Defying Bettman
Tonight Marc-Andre Fleury was sporting a new look when he took the ice. He has a new mask dedicated to Native American Heritage that he was planning to wear tonight for a special occasion in Minnesota.
Marc-Andre Fleury is wearing his Native American Heritage mask in warmups.
Fleury in doing so broke a new major NHL rule. Players are not allowed to wear equipment or jerseys that support specialty nights or causes. However, Fleury does not care and is willing to pay the hefty fine.
UPDATE: Rule be damned, Marc-Andre Fleury is wearing his Native American Heritage mask in warmups. I'm told it's very unlikely he or the #mnwild will be fined, but he's risking it
His mask is up to $5,600 in the auctionvastly more than any other item
Fleury's support is being shown massive support by the NHL community on social media. It also is creating a conversation around the rules associated with these restrictions.
NHL Facing Backlash Once Again For Specialty Night Rules
What began as a discussion around pride nights in the NHL has expanded to far more than that. NHL teams were originally outlawed from wearing specialty jerseys due to controversy sparked last year with players opting out of wearing them.
This then expanded to pride tape as well however several players have worn the pride tape regardless of the ban leading to the NHL walking back their ruling. Now Fleury is once again challenging the NHL to discipline a player for supporting a cause.
It will be interesting to see if the NHL backs down again and lets players control what they wear or will they crack down again. Only time will be able to tell which way things will go.
