If you've followed the Penguins since Sidney Crosby was drafted, you'd know that Crosby has suffered multiple injuries, especially concussions, during his time with the Penguins. At one point, however, Crosby's former teammates once wanted him stripped of his captaincy over something out of his control.

Injuries Open Discussion

Crosby missed more than half of 3 seasons, due to injuries. His extended absence in 2011 due to a concussion opened discussion among teammates about whether it was time to name a new captain.

Thanks to Sid's right hand man, teammate Evgeni Malkin, however, Crosby was able to stay captain.

According to Josh Yohe from The Athletic , teammates Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik, Craig Adams and Matt Cooke were among the teammates that wanted a new captain.

"'Those four were exploring the possibility of naming someone else team captain until Crosby came back. On the other side of the debate were Marc-Andre Fleury, Malkin, Pascal Dupuis and Arron Asham. A rather heated discussion broke out. At the end, Malkin made his point clear: «Guys. Sid is the f****** captain.» Then he left the room. And the conversation was over.'"

Crosby was able to come back after nearly a year long absence and get back to helping his team win.

Crosby was named captain at just 19 years and 324 days old in 2007. He held the title of the youngest NHL player to be named captain until Connor McDavid was named captain of the Edmonton Oilers at 19 years and 266 days old in 2016.
