Former Head Coach Shares Previous Experience With William Nylander's Father
Bruce Boudreau has shared his experiences with Michael Nylander, father of William Nylander.
Boudreau's Nylander Story
Bruce Boudreau is one of the most beloved characters in all of hockey. He has been both a coach and a GM which means he knows the intricacies of hockey quite well.
Recently on the NHL Network, Boudreau spoke about the Auston Matthews extension and he dropped a tidbit of information about his time negotiating with Michael Nylander, William's father.
William's last contract went down to the wire, with him holding out until December. He's likely to expect a significant pay bump after Auston's deal. Especially if his performance this year mirrors last season's. And, considering Mitch, he too will demand a hefty paycheck.
It does pose challenges. I can't fathom how all three can be accommodated without sacrifices. Securing Auston was the priority, and rightfully so. But, William scored as much as Austin last year. He might not play center or excel defensively like Auston, but he's bound to command around 10 million or more."
What We Can Expect
Boudreau's insight is quite valuable. Mentioning how Michael Nylander was difficult to negotiate with offers insight into why William Nylander's contract situation is so worrisome.
Coming off an 87-point year, Nylander is clearly worth a massive pay raise from the $6.9 million he is getting paid currently.
Michael Nylander bounced around the NHL playing for the Whalers, Flames, Capitals, Blackhawks, Lightning, Bruins, and Rangers, Nylander ensured he got paid wherever he went.
Now with William Nylander's contract coming to an end next year, we will have to watch and see if he gets paid by the Maple Leafs or if he starts jumping from team to team chasing the next paycheck like his father did.
