Tonight Maple Leafs forward William Nylander did something no other player in franchise history has. With his assist in tonight's game, William Nylander extended his point streak to 9 games to begin the season. This is the longest point streak to begin the season in NHL history.
With his play early in the season he has created a good news bad news situation for the organization. On one hand, Nylander is playing well which is needed if the Maple Leafs are going to have a successful season. On the other hand, he still doesn't have a contract and his price is climbing every single day.
William Nylander is in the last year of his contract his play early in the season has left people wondering what the next step is. His price has certainly gone up since the beginning of the season. Does this make a trade more likely?
The Maple Leafs were rumored to be exploring trades over the summer involving Nylander. If contract talks are still not close the talks will likely intensify soon. The Maple Leafs could take advantage of Nylander's all-time high value right now and move him.
If Toronto moves him and he continues his production fans and media will ridicule the front office for not finding a way to keep him around. If they sign him and his production dips back down and the Maple Leafs fail in the playoffs again the ridicule begins for overpaying him.
It will be fascinating to see which avenue Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs take if this production continues for William Nylander.
