Chris Tanev's recent deal with the Leafs is creating quite the discussion regarding how teams use or try to abuse LTIR.
It's widely expected that Tanev will one day end his career on LTIR due to his major recurring injuries, and by being placed on the LTIR, the Leafs would be completely off the hook from his salary affecting the cap, which means they would have tons of available cash to use on other players. Gary Bettman isn't too happy about this, and changes could be coming.
The Maple Leafs aren't guilty of anything right now because there aren't any rules in place for this, however it's widely expected that they know one day Tanev will end up on LTIR, so fans around the league are calling for the NHL to look into how it can potentially one day affect the salary cap, unlike how it has no bearing on it now.
Bettman likely won't be making any immediate changes just because the Leafs signed Tanev, however when the next CBA agreement is due for renewal, there could possibly be changes then.
Chris Tanev has played in 792 career NHL games, and has scored a total of 33 goals and 190 points. He's also added 13 points in 60 career playoff games.
