Being in the NHL is not always easy.

On top of all the pressure that players have on their shoulders, they also have to cope with the constant possibility of trade, waivers or simply being cut off.

Curtis McElhinney was a goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs between 2016 and 2018.

He played 30 games with the Leafs and had a record of 17-12-1 before being put on waivers by Dubas.

He was then claimed by the Hurricanes and played 33 games in Carolina in 2018-2019.

McElhinney was invited to the JD Bunkis podcast and spoke about his experience with Dubas and the Leafs dumping him on waivers.

It's no secret that this kind of experience isn't easy to live, especially when you don't expect it.

He talked about it and described how he felt when it happened.

"I was so bitter, so bitter. I loved it there. It was the first time I found a home and felt like I'd had success that I'd been looking for a lot of my career. It seemed like it was a perfect fit...It all came together, but it was a tough pill to swallow.

It's one of those things you have to accept some things that don't really add up in your mind, it's just the way it works... In reality I don't think the expectations were that long for me or that high for me at the time, but it obviously worked out well for me in the short time I was there."

Things turned out well for him, as he joined the Tampa Bay Lightning and won two Stanley Cups before retiring.
