Former Toronto Maple Leafs analyst reveals Pierre Engvall requested a trade
Jack Han is a former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey operations department and today he revealed that Pierre Engvall requested a trade during the 2018-19 season.
At the time, the 6'5" forward was playing with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. He had been pushed down the depth charts as the team acquired more winger prospects, making his path to the NHL difficult at best. According to Han, this lead to him requesting a trade in 2018.
We basically didnt have enough top-six and PP minutes at the AHL level for Engvall. It got to a point where, late in 2018, he asked for a trade.
Coincidentally, Keefe & I had been talking aboutg Engvall to center due to his highend skating and ability to control the middle
Luckily for the Leafs, they found another solution. Han, who was working in player development with the team, worked together with Sheldon Keefe to move Engvall to center, where he would eventually learn to master the position, earning a callup during the 2019-20 season.
It took Gagner getting recalled to the Canucks and Mueller going down to injury for us to try Engvall at C. And to some people's surprise he did really well. The following season he was a 1C at the AHL level before being called up for good.
Pierre played with the Toronto Maple Leafs but never excelled. He has been a regular at the NHL level since then, playing 318 career NHL games so far, 226 of which came with the Leafs. Of course, the Leafs would later trade Engvall anyways as they sent him to the New York Islanders in exchange for a 2024 3rd round pick.
#Isles Transaction: The New York Islanders have acquired forward Pierre Engvall from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a third round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
