The Athletic ranked the Toronto Maple Leafs as having the 28th best prospect pool this season. However, the team added some depth to their limited prospect pool earlier this month. The Leafs signed NCAA free agent Jacob Quillan to an entry-level-contract, snagging one of the best NCAA prospects this season. Quillan was a Hobey Baker candidate is back-to-back seasons after be put up 38 and 46 point seasons in his final two years of college hockey. Now he has revealed why the Toronto Maple Leafs were such an appealing option to him in free agency.
Quillan grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia but was raised a Leafs fan. As such, he is currently living out his childhood dream of playing for the organization. He is now just one step removed from making his debut with his favorite NHL club. It is the most difficult step to make, but one that Quillan is capable of. Toronto Marlies head coach John Gruden already seems to be a fan of Quillan, emphasizing his size and tendency to go to the net as advantages for the AHL rookie.
He also called Quillan a winner, implying that he has the mentality that it takes to win in the NHL. Notably, Quillan helped Quinnipiac University win their first ever NCAA championship last season. Quillan even scored the game-winning goal in overtime to secure that championship.
While Quillan likely won't play in a top-six role for the Leafs, perhaps he has a few more clutch goals in his future in the NHL. Hopefully for the Leafs, he will help the team win their own championship. It won't be the team's first, but it would be the first in a very long time assuming the Leafs don't win the Stanley Cup this year.
