Knies and Faber were teammates during their NCAA days with the University of Minnesota.
Now, one is $68 million richer, and one is still looking for an extension, but when will it come?
As of July 1, the Maple Leafs and Knies were free to negotiate an extension; however, the asking price likely won't be in the same range as Faber's was.
Maple Leafs' GM Brad Treliving would be smart to experiment with a bridge deal with Knies.
Somewhere in the range of $3 million over three seasons, this should allow the organization to keep him under contract with a team-friendly AAV while still having Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander signed as well.
This will allow Knies to ramp up his earnings near the end of the Matthews contract, and by the time that happens, the salary cap will be significantly higher and will allow them to re-sign the entire core.
Knies is coming off of a season in which he scored 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points in 80 games.
