Marner has always been a highly scrutinized player, but this season things hit another level. The Leafs winger was under a bright spotlight as fans consistently picked on him for his effort level in their series against Boston. The way the series ended did not help things as Marner appeared to completely blow his coverage on David Pastrnak, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime while Marner coasted around.
Earlier in the series, Marner was in headlines as he had a temper tantrum on the bench. He could be seen throwing his gloves in disgust as Auston Matthews and William Nylander tried to tell him to act his age. Needless to say, fans were not please with this interaction either.
Apparently, the criticisms of Marner have gone too far for him. It seems as though he can't take the heat as he has reportedly hired a private security detail to protect him from media personnel when he is not on the clock. This is somewhat embarrassing for a professional athlete. If Marner cannot handle the pressure of playing in Toronto, perhaps he should ask for a trade, with a willingness to waive his no-move clause.
