According to insider David Pagnotta, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been in discussions with the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman David Savard.

Known for his solid defensive play, Savard has earned a reputation as a reliable, stay at home defenseman who can help the team's success.

In an effort to bolster their defense and help their top defenseman Morgan Rielly,
the Toronto Maple Leafs will need to acquire David Savard and possibly give up a first round pick.

GM Brad Treliving made it clear that the Maple Leafs will not be trading top prospects Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten.

What makes Savard so interesting as a defensive player is his playoff experience. He was a key part of Tampa Bay 2021 run to the Stanley Cup and his physicality and shot blocking make an absolute threat.

With the Maple Leafs in a cap crunch for the next few seasons Savard's two year contract is very favourable. He wouldn't just be your rental, he would be a piece of a team for at least the next two years.

With all these factors, could David Savard be too good to pass up for Brad Treliving?
