Yesterday, the NHL's Department of Player Safety finally reached a conclusion for Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly. The 29-year-old was offered an in-person hearing after he cross checked Ridly Greig in the face last Saturday.
He served the first game of the suspension last night when the Leafs took down the St. Louis Blues. It was Rielly's first suspension in his long NHL career, making the league's handling of the situation all that much worse. Apparently, the Leafs were not particularly thrilled about how everything went down either.
According to Darren Dreger, the Leafs are 'disappointed' in the NHL after it was announced yesterday that defenseman Morgan Rielly would be getting a five-game suspension for cross checking Senators forward Ridly Greig. NHL insider Kevin Weekes was first to report the suspension. Apparently, Weekes knew about the decision before just about anyone else, including the Leafs and even Rielly himself.
This is not a good look for the NHL. The Department of Player Safety already has a questionable reputation at best, but this is just another nail in the coffin. The fact that the Leafs learned about Rielly's suspension through social media is completely unacceptable and the league needs to figure out how they can better handle these situations in the future.
