NHL veteran and generational goal scoring talent Alex Ovechkin has enjoyed a lengthy career as one of, if not the best snipers to ever set foot on NHL ice. Despite his massive popularity, however, some have called out the superstar's very public affiliation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This has only worsened as the Ukrainian conflict has grown, and it appears as though Ovechkin is once again in the cross-hairs of the public.
Popular Hockey Website Calls Out Ovechkin
MoneyPuck is an immensely popular website that tracks just about every hockey statistic you can think of. From playoff and draft lottery odds, to advanced statistics, they've got it all.
MoneyPuck has also built quite the name for themselves by publicly criticizing players who've refused to wear pride jerseys, in the form of making their names rainbow colors on their site. It looks like they've chose Ovi as their next target, as fans noticed something interesting on their site recently.
Ovechkin's name now reads "Alex 'I Support Putin' Ovechkin" on MoneyPuck. In addition to this, when you click on his name, it now redirects to an article addressing the Russian's close ties to Putin, and a Ukraine relief donation page.
It's very clear what MoneyPuck thinks of Ovechkin, and his continued support from the league.
