Despite the fact that the Washington Capitals got swept in the first round of the playoffs last season, they did have a positive story line, which was that Ovechkin kept getting closer and closer to Gretzky's NHL goal record, now sitting only 41 goals shy of tying it. The Great 8 has currently played 61 games less than Gretzky, so he pretty much has a very similar goals per games ratio as The Great One.
Now, Ovi is blaming Bettman for not being the current record holder already.
Alex Ovechkin has missed over 70 games due to the pandemic and the lockout season, so when looking at his goals pace, he is correct in saying that he would have already held the record had Bettman never cancelled those games.
Ovechkin still has two years left on his contract with the Capitals, so all he would need is 21 goals over the next two seasons to break the record, which barring any injuries, he should absolutely hit.
Ovi may not have the play-making prowess that Gretzky had, but he is arguably the best pure goal scorer of all time, with a ferocious shot from the slot. Give it a couple of more seasons, and we will be witnessing NHL history. Wayne get ready, Ovi is coming for you.
