Auston Matthews is having a disappointing start to his 2022-23 campaign. While he is playing at a point-per-game pace, with fourteen points in his last fourteen games, he has had trouble scoring goals.

With only six goals in his past fourteen games, Matthews is playing at only a 35-goal pace. This is far from his expected total of well over 50. Coming off of a Hart and a Maurice (Rocket) Richard trophy, these results are deplorable.

This has rightfully caused significant negative media attention towards Matthews.

In an interview, Matthews was asked about this attention. He responded quite candidly:

I mean, we have one goal and that's obviously to win.

I could really give a sh-t whatever everybody else out there thinks about hit this, hit that, like, I just want to win. So I could really care less.

I feel like I know what I'm capable of,» Matthews said then, «and I want to continue to get better and grow as a player and as a leader on this team. But I mean, in the end, we're judged off of wins and I mean, I just want to win.

Hopefully Matthews can right the ship, as he is eligible for a contract extension on the first day of 2023 free agency.
