Auston Matthews praised by Nylander and Keefe after the opening draw of last night's game
The Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Chicago Blackhawks last night and were on fire as right away, William Nylander put the Leafs up over the Hawks after a faceoff victory.
The night would end up being one with a Toronto victory, with Nylander putting up 3 points and Matthews with a return to form after injury with a two-point night.
William Nylander credits Auston Matthews for Toronto's goal off the opening draw
"We just talked about in the locker room & that was kind of what we were going to try & do & it worked out ... It was Matty's idea to draw that play up" With the phenomenal forecheck after the face-off win, Nylander credited Matthews with taking charge and creating the play, with led to the first point against Chicago. Sheldon Keefe would go on to compliment Matthews's play and tenacity as well.
"If you watch any experienced & championship-caliber team, their people are taking charge of different situations. That is what you love to see: those guys take the initiative & execute".
Matthews had previously been out for 3 weeks, beyond the All-Star break dealing with a knee injury. The Maple Leafs are fortunate he only missed 5 games as a result of the bye week as well. It was only last night that he indicated he was healthy enough to compete and put up his 26th goal of the season and 29th assist, for 55 points total and he's not stopping yet.
