Still without a contract with the Vancouver Canucks, forward Elias Pettersson spoke about his intentions today. He was confident that an agreement will be signed soon between the two sides, but mentions that his agent is in charge of the file. He has no concerns in these negotiations.
The 22-year-old Swedish center says he wants to stay in Vancouver for the long term, but he would like to be with a winning team next year. It is understandable, as the Canucks have missed the playoffs 2 out of 3 times since his arrival with the team.
"I WANT TO STAY IN VANCOUVER NOW, BUT I ALSO WANT TO PLAY FOR A TEAM THAT WINS AND HAS A GOOD CHANCE OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS EVERY YEAR. I THINK WE'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO DO THAT NEXT YEAR."
He was unable to help his team as much as he would have liked last year with only 26 games, even though he had 21 total points. In 2021, the Canucks had a difficult season especially on defense, as there was a lack of depth at that position. The additions of Conor Garland and Oliver Ekman-Larsson should still help greatly, while adding a better campaign from Brock Boeser, JT Miller and Quinn Hughes.
In short, Pettersson's wish could be granted if everyone plays better than last year in a normal division this time around. Several young players are developing and should be better this year.
