This Monday, the NHL board of governors overwhelmingly approved the ad policy. The document states that clubs can now begin negotiations with possible partners.
The advertising must be 3 inches by 3.5 inches, somewhat larger than the patches on the NBA's 2017-18 jerseys. Requests for comment from the NHL went unanswered.
These aren't the first ads on NHL players. During the pandemic's cash struggle, the NHL permitted teams to sell modest ad space on their helmets starting last season. Commissioner Gary Bettman estimated the scheme saved teams over $100 million.
Jersey advertising, common in professional sports worldwide, have been less common in the US, but that is changing. Aside from the NBA, the WNBA and MLS both allow teams to sell advertising on their shirts.
Marketers love the jersey because it gets a lot of TV exposure during games. That section was reserved for the NBA's own logos for a long time.
New patch programme anticipated to enhance NBA income by $150 million annually Individual team deals ranged from $500,000 to $20 million.
