As I said Kelly used some rather inflammatory language in this piece so I will let him speak, in his own words:
«So, in the best interests of hockey, the Pittsburgh Penguins must die.»
Surprisingly, Kelly's only suggestion in his article is a team that, in my opinion, isn't any better than the current Penguins. While the plot, as well as the storyline that might arise from any trade involving Sidney Crosby, is intriguing, Kelly's suggestion of Montreal as a possible destination strikes me as particularly enticing.
Again in his own words:
«Montreal has always been the dream destination, narratively speaking. Imagine Crosby reinvigorating the league's most storied franchise?»
One of the reasons Kelly wants Crosby to play for a Canadian team is to see him form a rivalry with Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid, who is an excellent player on the ice but doesn't have the most charismatic personality. Kelly claims the move will help McDavid, this generation's superstar, gain even more recognition, potentially passing the torch and making him the face of the NHL.
Once more in his own words:
«The NHL could run wild with an ancien régime vs. arrivistes storyline pitting Crosby and the Canadiens vs. McDavid and the Oilers.»
Despite the fact that the Penguins will undoubtedly benefit from a return that would help them lead their franchise into the future, one that would have an effect on the team long after Crosby has retired from the sport, I believe that few Pittsburgh fans will support this proposal. Particularly in light of the inflammatory tone with which it has been presented.
