Don Cherry, despite being away from the big screen for several years, is still one of the most respected men in hockey.

Auston Matthews, who's stardom started right around Cherry's departure, avoided his brutal honesty, and intelligence of the game.

Now, Auston Matthews is under fire from fans for his embarrassing effort in a brawl against the Philadelphia Flyers. Matthews, who sparked a fight, just stood out of the way and let his teammate, 39-year-old Mark Giordano do the dirty work for him.

Cherry spoke out about the event on his most recent podcast:

I like Matthews, he's a good goal scorer and everything but you just can't do that when you're a goal scorer.

He's gotta learn, just skate away.

Don't stand there laughing while some other guy is fighting your battle for you.

Cherry suggests that Matthews should have the approach of Guy Lafleur.

You have to take it like Lafleur.

The only time Lafleur ever got mad was when him and Mike Milbury used to go at it.

Don't start anything and just leave it alone and when the fight is going on don't stand there and laugh.

Basically, Cherry believes that Matthews shouldn't dish if he can't deal with the consequences.

What a wildly embarrassing display by the Hart winner.
