Acquired from the Buffalo Sabres for a 3rd and 5th round pick in 2021 by the Montreal Canadiens on the cusp of a historic playoff run, veteran Eric Staal is now in reflection mode regarding his future.

His agent Rick Curran told TVA Sports today that there are no updates to be made at this time.

Staal, 36, is still an uncompensated free agent.

The past year has been very reflective for him, it has been very difficult for him to be away from his family. During his press conference after the elimination of his team in the Grand Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Staal simply mentioned that it was time for him to go home to his wife and 3 children.

He didn't see his family for 6 long months, imagine that!

"My future is to come home first, to be a father and a husband. I've never experienced this before (being separated from his family). We'll have decisions to make together next, but not now."

Staal also took the opportunity to shower his wife with compliments for all she has accomplished in his absence and for her help and dedication to the children.

In making his decision, he also has to consider the fact that he has a back and left pectoral muscle injury to deal with.

According to the excellent Pierre LeBrun, from the Eric Staal camp, "The door is not closed on Montreal".
