When Kent Hughes announced that he had placed Carey Price's name on the long-term injury list, nobody was surprised. The Habs goalie is in bad shape and many believe his career is over.

While we all knew that Carey would not be fit to play, we wondered why his name was not submitted to the long-term injury list. After all, we had known about this for a few weeks and Kent Hughes was not moving.

Here is the answer:

"We were limited on the salary cap. That's why, when we had an idea of where we wanted to go with Kirby Dach, we decided to put it on hold. [...] If we had another deal, maybe we wouldn't have been forced to use the long-term injured list in the offseason and it would have given us more flexibility during the season." - Kent Hughes

Obviously, Kirby Dach's contract is too lucrative to leave Carey Price's name off the long-term injury list. However, even if it doesn't change anything monetarily, Hughes preferred to wait until he was sure of his move before making that decision. In short, there's never anything unthought out or impulsive with the Habs general manager and that's to his credit.
