Currently, Nathan Mackinnon holds the NHL record for the highest average-annual-value contract in the league, with his eight-year, $12.6-million extension beginning in 2023-24.

He won't hold this record for long, however, as Auston Matthews' $11.64-million bridge deal expires next season. Leafs insider Nick Kypreos has revealed what Matthews' next contract will look like. Whether he stays in Toronto or not, he is bound to break this record by quite a bit.

Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.

Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply "hand it over" to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger.

If the Leafs intend on keeping Matthews, it will cost them in the range of $15-million annually. Unfortunately, William Nylander will come as a casualty to this signing.

If Toronto refuses to pay this much, it is likely we will see their franchise player head elsewhere.

It will be an interesting story to follow.
