Henrik Lundqvist, who played for the New York Rangers for 15 seasons, announced his retirement on Friday morning.
This news came as a surprise given that the 39-year-old seemed to be hinting at a comeback on Twitter last week. Having to miss the full 2019-20 season due to open heart surgery, this was definitely for the best.
Many people expressed their admiration for the 2011-12 Vezina Trophy winner, including former NHL star Roberto Luongo.
Congrats on a fantastic career! Luongo tweeted. «I used to get excited when I knew you were in the crease at the other end!»
That was thoughtful of Luongo, but he quickly followed up with a humorous tweet, mocking himself and Lundqvist for never having won a Stanley Cup.
«Two GOATS no Cup?» «Luongo» «Consider.»
Expect to hear more praises from Lundqvist's former teammates throughout the day. Unbelievably, he was considered one of the top goaltenders in the NHL for years, if not the best. We wish him a happy retirement.
