The last time a player signed an offer sheet was when the Habs sought to capture Canes standout Sebastian Aho in 2019. To that end, the Hurricanes promised Kotkaniemi a $20 singing bonus, matching Aho's jersey number. Montreal GM Marc Bergevin has until September 4 to match the offer sheet or accept compensation in draught picks.
While that is still being worked out, one hockey analyst believes Kotkaniemi isn't worth what Carolina is offering him.
Brian Hayes, host of TSN's OverDrive podcast, said:
"He can't equal $6 million, he's not good enough," Hayes said. "He'll never be a superstar, he lacks it. They drafted him because they needed him at that position."
Last season, he has five goals and three assists in 171 NHL games, all with the Habs.
I agree with Hayes. Kotkaniemi is simply not good enough! He is a tall soft player but we never know what he will become 3-4 years from now. Honestly, surrounded by Canes players KK might be in a better place.
