In his most recent piece on The Athletic, insider Pierre LeBrun revealed what he believes is the price of securing the services of Montreal Canadiens defenceman Joel Edmundson.
Despite Edmundson's struggles in recent games, the veteran defenseman would be worth at least a first-round pick.
What explains this high value? The price Tampa Bay paid for David Savard in 2020. They gave a first and third round pick.
The same goes for the Panthers, who paid a first round pick for Ben Chiarot.
This seems to be the standard across the NHL.
But the fact that Edmundson has one more year at $3.5 million could change that.
LeBrun says the Canadiens are not necessarily willing to trade him quickly for that reason. But if Edmundson gets hurt again or struggles between now and the end of the season, Hughes could quickly regret not trading him first.
So this is a case to watch.
