Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, a popular observer (and informer) on DansLesCoulisses.com, addressed the delicate matter of Jeff Petry today.
Beaudoin agrees that Petry should go shortly, and he values him highly. He explains that NHL GMs are sophisticated enough to look beyond the recent 30 games. From 2018 through 2021, Petry was one of the NHL's best (and most productive) defensemen.
"If the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons are combined, Jeff Petry is 11th in scoring. 128 points in 208 games. And that's more than Drew Doughty and Alex Pietrangelo. If we do the same thing for 2017-18, Petry is 13th, still ahead of numerous major names. We're looking at 290 games here. Do you think NHL management will base their decisions on a sample size of 37 or 290 games? To ask is to answer!" - M.-O. Beaudoin
He thinks Petry's worth is high right now. His whole answer is near the end of the piece.
So he proposes a trade that would benefit both clubs. A quality defensive defenseman like Mattias Ekholm might tremendously help Petry.
