Many have said that a coaching change may occur during the season, although that is not typical of current Oilers GM Ken Holland.
As a result of the Canadiens' lack of playoff prospects this season, there are currently rumblings that the Oilers may be interested in a forward on their roster.
"I know that my team is looking into what it would take to acquire him and I've been told by more than one team that the Edmonton Oilers are very interested,» said an NHL team executive as per Murphy's report. "They thought they were getting enough sandpaper from a guy that can pot 20 goals with Zach Hyman, but it's pretty clear they need more of those players in their middle six."
It appears that the Oilers are trying to add more sandpaper to their roster, similar to how they added Zach Hyman in the winter.
The Canadiens would have to retain salary on Gallagher's contract, which would increase the asset's value for the Oilers.
In order to rebuild the Canadiens squad into something more in line with his vision, newly recruited executive vice president Geoff Gorton may be interested in acquiring high end draft picks and retaining payroll in a deal like this.
Would Gallagher be a good fit on the Oilers?
