In recent years, Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos has had his name mentioned in trade rumors due to both his problems staying healthy as well as to help the team stay cap compliant.
Obviously, no such move has been made, and after just recently winning their second Stanley Cup in as many years, almost no one would have expected a deal to be made anytime soon. However, according to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Lightning may look to trade their captain this summer.
«Starting to hear the whispers again of the future of their captain Steven Stamkos in Tampa Bay,» Dreger said on TSN1050.
Thought the Lightning would prefer not to make this move, their cap situation has been well documented as of late, and will only get tougher moving forward given that the salary cap will remain flat next season. At this point, they have other pieces such as Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy who are all more important to this team.
If they do decide to take offers on Stamkos, you can bet the return would be very significant. Though he may not be the 60-goal scorer he once was, he is still a terrific player at 31 years old and had 17 goals and 34 points in 38 contests this season.
