Huge bad news from the Colorado Avalanche as head coach Jared Bednar announced today that he is losing the services of three key players on his roster for several games.
First, he said that forward Valeri Nichushkin had surgery on his ankle and will be out for about a month. The 27-year-old Russian has been dominant since the start of the season, scoring 12 points in seven games so far.
Then he announced that defenceman Bowen Byram has a lower-body injury and will be out for a few weeks, although he did not specify a period of absence.
Finally, he added that defender Samuel Girard was also injured, but that his condition would be reassessed on a day-to-day basis. His injury would therefore be less serious than that of his team-mates.
The team captain, Gabriel Landeskog, has yet to play a game this season as he recovers from a knee injury. His return to the game is not expected for several more weeks.
It will therefore be a major challenge for Bednar's men to keep their heads above water during the absence of these many key days in the squad.
