As reported by Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, the Montreal Canadiens will soon lose their famous first pick.

Since April 2022, Kent Hughes had the first choice to select a player placed on waivers.

Despite this, the Habs' GM took advantage of this opportunity only once, by acquiring defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic from the Winnipeg Jets.

On November 1st, the CH will lose this important privilege, as stipulated in the NHL collective agreement:

In the event that more than one club claims such a player, the player: (i) shall be transferred to the claiming club with the lowest possible percentage of points in the League standings at the time of the waiver request, or (ii) if waivers are requested outside of the Regular Season, or if the successful waiver request is made (i.e., the date on which the player would be transferred to a successful claiming club under this section), prior to November 1, then priority shall be determined by the final standings in the League's Regular Season schedule during the previous Regular Season
