Sportsnet is the largest sports network in Canada, owned by Rogers Sports and Media. However, after over a decade, the company made a clear move to change directions by firing one of its most prominent broadcasters. Jeff Marek left the 32 Thoughts Podcast following the 2024 NHL Draft, sharing a message of gratitude a month later.
Fans were left confused and disheartened after the dismissal of one of their favorite on-air personalities, leaving many questions about what was to come next from the company. However, one Insider known as "Jonah" reported that Marek's departure, while unrelated, is likely one of many to come from Sportsnet in the near future.
Amidst impending mass layoffs in Sportsnet, there is one broadcaster hockey fans have named as someone they hope is the next target. That broadcaster is Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada, who has hosted the program for nearly four decades.
It is abundantly clear that Ron MacLean is among the least popular personalities still working with Sportsent, and with his long tenure, the most outdated.
Despite his lack of favorability, "Jonah" squelched any hopes that this would mean the end for the host. With two years left on his NHL Rogers deal, MacLean is unlikely to leave his post amidst company changes.
Though wishing someone would lose their job is unkind, it is hard to rationalize that a company looking to make positive innovations in sportscasting would not look to part ways with one of their longest-tenured personalities after terminating one of the most beloved.
Yet, with two more years on their contract with Ron MacLean, Sportsnet may have to hinge their bets on making the next two years pass quickly.
