One Toronto Maple Leafs Player Who Won't Stick Around This Season
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made major shakeups to their lineup this offseason. The biggest signing to many has been the acquisition of John Klingberg. With a player of Klingberg's caliber, it crowds the Leafs' blueline. This means one defenseman could be on his way out of Toronto.
T.J. Brodie has been a Toronto Maple Leaf for the past three seasons. He has had fluctuating playing time throughout his tenure in Toronto. Brodie is a solid two-way defenseman who can eat up minutes. However, he is not a game-changer offensively or defensively. With Klingberg entering the fold it makes Brodie and his five million dollar cap hit expendable. With the Leafs currently projected to be over the salary cap they will need to move a contract. Moving Brodie's contract alone would get them where they need to be.
Other Players Who Could Be Cap Casualties
Calle Jarnkrok is another name that has been mentioned in trade scenarios. He is 31 years old and has a cap hit of over 2 million for the next three seasons. At some point, Jarnkrok will not be worth that value. Moving him on to his next destination before that becomes a reality should be a goal for the Leafs.
As Brad Treliving starts to shape his identity for this team watch for many of the depth players that former general manager Kyle Dubas signed to be shipped out. This would be the case for both Jarnkrok and Brodie.
