William Nylander and Alexander Nylander have some eerie similarities aside from just being brothers. Both were drafted 8th overall in their respective draft years. William in 2014 and Alexander in 2016.
William has emerged as a superstar player who is coming off an 87 point campaign. Alexander on the other hand had just two points in 9 games last year.
That brings us to the concept of reuniting the brothers in an effort to offload Matt Murray's contract.
This trade primarily serves as a cap dump of Matt Murrays contract that returns him to Pittsburgh. It should cost roughly a third round pick to move Murray's contract. However, if the Leafs are able to pick up Nylander as a reclamation project it could certainly pay off.
With Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate, Nylander posted 50 points in 55 games. He is no slouch but it would be preferred if he were to do this in the NHL.
Acquiring Alexander Nylander could also result in William asking for less on his next contract as he would have his brother in town. It could be a way for Alexander to finally break out into what people were hoping he would turn into.
A line of Nylander-Tavares-Nylander would be super fun to watch and it would allow the brothers chemistry to shine through.
