Ron Hextall decided to bite the bullet and waive Kasperi Kapanen, whom he quickly lost to the St. Louis Blues. Taking the hammer to the third line once again, he waived Brock McGinn on Tuesday, along with Mark Friedman.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Can Finally Make A Move After They Waived These Two Players

With Friedman's cap hit stashed in the AHL, Kapanen gone and McGinn also waived, Hextall has some money to spend, but where?

The Penguins will not come out unscathed, as if McGinn is unclaimed, the depth winger will count $1.6 Million against the Penguins cap for him to play in Wilkes-Barre. With Kapanen being claimed by the Blues, and the Penguins having $1.8 Million in cap currently, by Friday that could be pushed to $2.1 Million.

The main difference in all of this is, if McGinn clears waivers or doesn't. If a team that could utilize his skills on the PK does claim him, the Penguins will have $5.62 Million and if he isn't picked up before Friday, they'll sit at $4 Million.

With all the big-name free-agents to be available, namely JT Miller, Brock Boeser, and Jakob Chychrun, they won't be able to afford them. It is all dependent upon McGinn being claimed.

He could be useful, as a depth option at 15 points in 59 games this season and 37 points overall in 123 games with the Penguins.

Hopefully some more luck will fall into Ron Hextall's lap, and team will choose to trade Brock McGinn.
