On July 1st, John Klingberg signed a contract with the maple leaf worth $4.15 million for 1 year. For a player of Klingbergs caliber, it will take more than just money for him to sign somewhere.
In an interview with Leafs reporter Luke Fox, Klingberg revealed to the world how Brad Treliving convinced him to sign.
One will immediately question what these things coming are and will assume it is the Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi signings which happened on July 2nd.
However, Fox clarified that the stuff Klingberg came after the signings.
There are a few potential things this could be. First off, the Leafs could buyout goaltender Matt Murray. Murray was not bought out in the first window but Treliving may decide to buy out Murray's final year to make space for other players.
This could also elude to an Auston Matthews contract extension which Leafs fans are desperately hoping for.
Finally, it could be hinting at a William Nylander trade. Nylander and the Leafs are not close on a deal and if the Leafs trade him, they will look to get better all around by acquiring top talent at positions of need.
Nonetheless, the Leafs are thankful to have Klingberg who will provide an offensive boost to the powerplay which is very dependent on their forward core.
