This year things did not go their way. Team Canada advanced past the round robin stage with ease, as is typical for the hockey powerhouse. However, things immediately unraveled today as the team played their first, and ultimately, only game in the knockout rounds. The team lost to team Czechia after a fluky goal went in with 11 seconds left in regulation.
With so little time left in the game, Canada was unable to tie the score to force overtime. This is just the third time in tournament history Canada failed to advance past the quarter finals. Former Team Canada superstar Connor Bedard had some thoughts to share about the upset.
Bedard famously carried Team Canada at the 2023 World Juniors when he put up an insane 23 points in 7 games. This year the team lacked that kind of talent and they were unable to find their scoring touch as they ended the quarter finals game with just two goals. Bedard shared his thoughts on the unfortunate outcome.
Many of the players on team Canada this year were teammates of Bedard's last year and many of them were 2023 draft eligible as well. As such, it is understandable that this loss would hit Bedard a little closer to home than many other Canadians, even other NHL players. Hopefully Canada can rebound next year as the team will look to avenge themselves, especially players that were a part of this team that will be there next year.
