Preseason hockey, though it doesn't mean anything for the season, means a lot for players who are vying for a spot in the top hockey league in the world. The effort shown by the guys looking for a spot is nearly playoff-level, while for others who are already on the team, it can be lacklustre.
It's commonly accepted that stars won't give it their all in preseason, however, this is something that players have to earn in the eyes of fans. For Alexis Lafreniere, Rangers' fans don't think he deserves to take a shift off, even in preseason.
In the Rangers-Islanders game, Lafreniere can be seen totally giving up on a play for the puck in the middle of the ice. His lack of effort ultimately leads him to be way out of position and diving at a chance for the puck as it is centred perfectly for an Islanders' goal.
This immediately led to some fans being furious with Lafreniere, calling for him to be cut from the team.
Lafreniere has not been the breakout NHL star that he was touted to be after being drafted first overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft by the Rangers. His career high in points is just 39, and he has never broken the 20-goal mark.
For him, this is a make-or-break year to determine if he can develop into an NHL star, or just be a depth scorer who struggles to find a home.
