The Pittsburgh Penguins have a big decision to make. Do they go all-in, or let themselves miss the playoffs? One massive trade will be the difference between continuing their 14-year long playoff streak, or essentially descending into mediocrity.

Per Rob Rossi of The Athletic, the Penguins have inquired several times on Jakob Chychrun. It would cost them a lot of the few trade chips they have left, but it could be a franchise saver.

Penguins Looking at Chychrun

Per Rossi, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan wants GM Ron Hextall to go after Chychrun.

Sullivan «wants Hextall to trade for Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun, but Hextall has balked at a potential deal because the Coyotes have asked the Penguins to include 2025 and 2026 first-round draft choices as part of any package, according to two team sources briefed on Hextall's thinking.»

This is smart thinking from the Coyotes, as it is likely the Penguins' core will have regressed significantly by that time. It is entirely possible that they will be a lottery team by 2025.

Hextall reportedly has no intention of trading any future first-round picks, but could a player like Jakob Chychrun change his mind? We'll just have to wait and see.
