In a recent interview, Auston Matthews shared his thoughts on the new season ahead after re-signing with the Leafs for the immediate future.

Matthews Shares His Love For Toronto and the Leafs

The talk of the offseason was whether or not Auston Matthews would sign an extension this summer with the Toronto Maple Leafs, or test free agency by letting his contract expire after this year. Many people thought there was potential for Matthews to sign somewhere else, questioning his loyalty to Toronto.

However, Matthews has been vocal about his love for the City and reiterated that in a recent NHL.com interview.

"I love it here," he told NHL.com in a 1-on-1 interview earlier this week. "I kept saying it over and over again whenever I was asked about my future. I'm not sure why some people didn't believe me." - Matthews on Toronto

Matthews Never Waivered in His Love For Toronto and Intention of Re-Signing

With Matthews being one of, if not the, best players in the NHL, it is easy to imagine that he would want to see how much money he could get on the free agency market. However, Leaf Fans can be reassured that Matthews never even thought about going somewhere else.

"So, when I see stuff like some of the speculation this summer, I get a pretty good chuckle out of it because it's just nonsense, to be honest with you."

He paused for a moment before elaborating.

"Look, if you didn't hear it from me, and you didn't hear it from my family, and you didn't hear it from my agent, then what are we talking about here? It's just like lies, just like people making stuff up.

Matthews clearly has the passion for the start of the year, putting up 6 goals in his first 2 games of the season.
