Per Elliotte Friedman, their final list of targets includes several interesting players.
The deadline is only four days away, and with many of the top names, including Timo Meier and Tanner Jeannot now off the board, the Leafs will have to get creative.
Elliotte Friedman brought up a whopping seven defensive targets. Some of them wouldn't necessarily move the needle, but with enough added fire power, the Leafs could improve their odds.
Gavrikov
Jensen
Van Riemsdyk
Schenn
Gudas
Mayfield*
Klingberg**
*Says that it'll be hard to get Mayfield from NYI
**Says he only put Klingberg because TOR had interest in the past
Of these seven players, Gavrikov and Klingberg would cost the most. Jensen and Van Riemsdyk from Washington are both intriguing, but we are unsure how committed the Capitals are to re-tooling (Orlov and Hathaway were both unlikely to re-sign).
Gudas led the league in hits last season and would be very impactful piece. The Panthers haven't yet made a commitment on if they push for the playoffs, so that could go right until the deadline.
Schenn, a former Leafs fifth overall pick, is much more of a depth move, but he provides fantastic leadership.
Finally, Mayfield is one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, making only $1.45-million this year. That would be an absolute coup for the Leafs, but it appears the Islanders are weary to sell.
We will see if Dubas can add a blueliner before the deadline. The price will be high, but the cost of another first-round exit would be higher.
Is it time for Dubas to go all-in?
